STEMINIST Mentorship Matters Program

Virtual - 30 min to 2 hours per month

We are honored to award scholarships each year, however we acknowledge that this is but one component of wraparound support that leads to the best possible outcomes for our students. Data shows that mentorship and participation in a community are among the most important key factors that directly improve post-secondary & career outcomes, as well as a multitude of wellness benefits, especially to women of color — many of whom are the only female of color in their academic or industry department.

We know our students are brilliant and we are confident in their ability to rise to any challenge — but that’s not enough in 2024. We need to get them in front of the right people: Industry leaders, decision-makers, game changers, and entrepreneurs at our nation’s top engineering & tech firms, so STEMinists have a clear vision of what is possible for their future.

Along with the scholarships, we have created the STEMINIST Mentorship program which provides the following:

  • Encouragement and support to our scholarship recipients as they work toward their educational and professional pursuits

  • Career readiness: resume and cover letter reviews, and mock interviews

  • Overall school support: discuss what is happening at school, test taking tips, and other topics as they arise (scholarship recipients are all freshman university students, experiencing college for the first time)

  • Professional Connections: we look to pair students with professionals working in the same professional discipline

Calculated Genius is extremely lucky to call upon a group of approximately 60 professionals from around the world. Seriously. One of our mentors is in New Zealand, but that is what it takes to connect women in these fields.

Schedule:

  • Virtual sessions will take place via Zoom / GMeet based on a pre-planned schedule between the mentor and student. Each group meets roughly 6-8 times per year, ideally once per month.

  • “Conversation Guides” are provided, which are optional and seek to catalyze substantive, goal-oriented conversations.

*Program participation will requires a signed scholarship acceptance form which allows the use of photos and videos to be shared to market the program.
