Giving Tuesday Season Fundraiser
Our 2020 Impact
This has been a difficult year for many. When schools and businesses shut down, Calculated Genius pivoted and took our programming virtual. Over the last ten months we have impacted over 90 students with our digital resources and programming.
Calculated Genius is invested in the genesis of an emerging and diverse pool of engineers that will transform Chicago into a more innovative and just 21st century city.
We are happy to share our impact below with clear resolve to increase our outreach and efforts in the years to come!
Summer Scholars Program
This summer fourteen Chicago high school students spent 6-weeks with us learning about real-life applications of engineering, entrepreneurship and technology. They met with over 33 mentors in STEM to hear about their educational and career paths. In the end, they pitched an entrepreneurial idea to solve a problem in their everyday life! They left with increased confident in STEM concepts and a greater understanding of career opportunities.
2020 STEMINIST Scholarship Awardees
This year we awarded $40,000 in scholarships to 15 women in support of their post-secondary degrees in STEM. These students can call on us for mentorship and support as they continue to explore their engineering career goals. In 2021, we will launch a series of workshops to support their educational and professional development!
Getting Back Into the STEM of Things
In collaboration with ComEd STEM Programs, ten of our female high school students participated in a virtual event to build a solar powered house! The event included an inspiring panel of leading women engineers in Solar Power and Energy at ComEd, lessons on insulation, conduction, and circuitry, and the requirements for building a smart house. Students then built their own smart house with working lights and temperature control they were able to showcase to the group!
Engineering Girl Essay Contest
We are assisting a total of twelve high school females as they write an essay for the Engineering Girl Essay Contest. The piece of writing should address the vital contributions engineers have made in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Each student will receive mentorship and essay review as they finalize their piece for a chance to win a $500 prize!
As you may know, Giving Tuesday is going to be coming up on December 1, 2020. #GivingTuesday is an annual global day of giving and generosity of all kinds, big and small.
This year we are hosting our first #GivingTuesday season fundraiser from November 24 - December 8 in hopes that everyone will have the opportunity to support underrepresented youth in engineering!
Please consider making a donation to Calculated Genius to help our community when they need it most. All donations are tax-deductible, and 100% of funds go directly to student educational programs and scholarships.
With your support, we can continue creating viable career paths in the engineering industry for our diverse group of talented students from across Chicago!
Sincerely,
Kelley Francis
